Challenge. An extensive cooling-water piping network at a major Gulf Coast refinery, with more than 125 heat exchangers drawing from it.
Approach. A hydraulic model of the full network, compared against more than 700 field measurements of pressure, flow and temperature.
Findings. Close agreement between measured and modeled flow and pressure conditions across the system.
Value. A calibrated model the refinery can use to test system changes before committing to them.
Eight further studies, from island energy and gas-turbine fuel systems to a high-rise chilled-water network.

Energy, surge analysis
Mitigation options were evaluated against low-pressure surge at the system high point after a pump trip. The system could withstand the brief cavitating pressures, and surge equipment was found unnecessary.

Power generation, gas transients
A turbine trip on a shared fuel-gas system was modeled as a sudden valve closure. Surge pressures would not trip the companion turbine or lift any relief valves.

Pipelines, surge analysis
A follow-on study for a line with a problematic response to valve closure at low flow, setting which emergency-shutdown valves could close, and how fast, within allowable pressures.

Power generation, surge analysis
Pump trips, pump starts and valve closures were run, and air/vacuum breaker valves were sized near the condensers and pump discharge valve.

Nuclear, flow modeling
One of two redundant cooling-water trains was modeled in full, the other independently checked, and the model calibrated to measured results for the major hydraulic loads.

Buildings, flow modeling
An operational hydraulic model of a major metropolitan high-rise chilled-water system, completed in half the time proposed under a fixed-price contract.

Industrial ventilation
A duct flow model of an industrial exhaust system, used to evaluate fan VFD operation and the effect of filter-bag condition on airflow.

Water, surge analysis
Pump trips, pump starts and pipeline rupture were analyzed and documented scenario by scenario, and the client determined from the study that there would be no issues.
